Art: My Journey Part 1

Since I was a little girl I was always drawn to coloring books, crayons, notebooks, and markers. My mom never denied me the opportunity to begin my newest creation. And to her I will always be grateful for that support and encouragement. I count her as part of the reason I developed a love for art and eventually pursued a major in this field. My passion and knowledge of art has truly exploded since I've begun my college career here at BYU-Idaho. We are truly blessed to have an absolutely phenomenal art staff here including teachers who have worked for Pixar, create and publish illustrations for the church Ensign, illustrate books for Deseret Book, own successful free lance designing businesses, and more. We are even blessed to have the instruction from the amazing Leon Parson. I have yet to take a class from him but I am excited to one day have the opportunity to learn from a master who has been an artist for over forty years, creates painting after painting of pristine wildlife, breathtaking figure drawings and paintings, and has painted the creation room murals in temples including the Rexburg temple and currently taken a year off teaching to paint for the Rome temple! You name it, Leon Parson can do it! So let's just say I haven't been cut short of a great education in art here!
Every semester, each art class whether it be a studio class, art history, art theory, etc. has been challenging in it's own way but in the end it has always been so rewarding. I have grown so much in such a short period of time and have a desire to continue studying the arts and developing my skills and knowledge. I think there's a line in the movie P.S I Love You when Holly, one of the main character says, "It is my duty to create!" She doesn't know exactly what she wants to do with it in life but that she must seek a way to create! I have similar feelings in the fact that I'm not entirely sure what direction I want to go with art, but that I must continue pursuing and learning all that I can.
So I've decided to share some inspiring quotes I've learned about art theory, encouraging thoughts and advice from my teachers, some artist's work I aspire to become like one day, and my personal artwork throughout the years. I have so much to share that I'm going to post this in four segments. It's a lot to take in but a journey I want to share because it is what makes me, me! And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Quotes from Masters of Art and Art Theory

"Art is imitation. The artist is an imitator. However, an artist must possess knowledge of specific imitative skills or he is not an artist." -Plato

"Art is completing what nature could not complete while partly imitating nature." -Aristotle

"An artist is someone who has something to say and knows how to say it with technical knowledge and skill." -Stieglitz

"Art is not mere imitation. For art to occur one must pass the facts of reality through one's imagination and endow them with new life...For example, an artist who paints portraits will not merely record a likeness of the sitter, but the soul of the original." -Belinsky

"Art is an intensely experienced sensation of being alive." -Pater

"The aesthetic experience is the calm amidst chaos, peace, or the temporary release from the unrelenting grind of desire, the miserable pressure of the will." -Schopenhauer

"Art is expression of the imaginative life."- Fry

"Art for art's sake. Art is pleasure." -Gautier

"Art is communication. The artist imagines or experiences an emotion and communicates this exact emotion to a viewer via the elements of art. The viewer is infected by the artists' communicated emotion and both are now united by this common emotional experience." -Tolstoy

"Art is vision or intuition." -Croce

"The creation of beauty is art." -Emerson

For one of my classes we were asked to create a piece exploring the area of art we were pursuing. At the time I was considering art therapy and wanted to see the effects art had on people of all ages, dealing with A-Z situations. I discovered that a lot of beautiful and emotional work can be produced using the arts and can help communicate strong feelings.
Currently I've been feeling that art therapy may not be the right direction for me, but I'm still learning and growing and will one day choose the path involving art that is best for me and my family.
This is the piece I compiled of art work from participants of all walks of life including friends, family, the elderly, roommates, and myself expressing different emotions through the creative process.
